Fab weekend
Jun. 8th, 2014 11:11 pmWith four of my favourite friends, in Reading then down to Alresford for Alresford Music Festival.

Despite the torrential rain as we drove down the motorway and the threatening skies, the clouds cleared as we reached the site and the rest of Saturday was sunny and hot.
I didn't take the sunscreen to the site, the weather looked that bad when we set out, and I thought I had an emergency sachet in the rucksack, but I must have used it. Fortunately, roaming sunscreen monitors on site filled the gap, but if I ever, ever say to you, 'Nah, I'm not taking it.' with regards to sunscreen, feel free to slap me about the head.
Site was flat and pretty dry, given the thunder storms. Bands were good, not too loud, the headliners, The Earthlights Boogie Band were excellent. Beer, Pimms and scrumpy were all excellent too.
As was the 6+ mile walk along the Wayfarer's Way with Steve (no, I couldn't sit for 12 hrs at a festival, no matter how congenial, I'd go bats). Alresford and environs are very beautiful, enchanted by the shallow chalk streams and rivers, fascinated by the flint and chalk. We came across what I thought was a whitewashed house along a green lane, it was actually a tree, felled in the winter storms, the chalk it's roots had been in is so white, it's stunning. Walking along green lanes is one of my favourite sorts of walk, and we were buzzed by a bi-plane when out on the ridge of a hill. Sadly, I didn't take my camera (didn't want to risk losing it at a festival) but Steve did and I think he got a shot of the plane.
Lots of kids and families at the festival, the stall which did the best trade had about 15 different sorts of slushies, in a myriad of flavours and was selling twisted plastic bottles with an integral straw, I think every kid at the place had at least one. I kept thinking how much fun you could have with alcoholic slushie on the same principle...

I was muddy (and sticky) enough to need a shower when we got back, still missed some of the mud on my feet (I'd been wearing flip flops when not in the walking boots).
Fab time, and the weather and company was perfect.
Today I came home via Reading (and a little walk along the river to Caversham Bridge and back. I've never seen so many swans as at the swan sanctuary, which were awfully keen for everyone to feed them bread, and a nursery of Canada geese goslings, very cute and fluffy!
Time for bed now.
