Five day midweek break was great idea, as I get the weekend to recover before going back to work. Weather was much better than expected, stormy at night, mostly sunshine, odd showers by day. Apart from today which was decidedly Welsh.

Gatehouse is a lovely cottage, quirky (it's Portmeirion, duh) pretty and lovely for stormy evenings when the other side of the estuary disappears behind the clouds. We called in on Tesco for food and Purple Moose brewery where I bought a mixed crate (three bottles of four different beers, ideal for three people over four nights? I'd say so!).

Tuesday, Serena and I walked over the hill and The Cob to Porthmadog, round town (back to the brewery for a stuffed purple moose...) and back to Portmeirion.

Wednesday, we did my favourite coastal walk from Criccieth (blogged about many times before) and then up the Dwyfor and back into town. We returned to Portmeirion to fresh cinnamon and fruit bread baked for us by John. We watched two episodes of The Prisoner, which is a bit meta and shows how little the place has changed over the years.

Thursday, I went for an early walk round Y Gwylt then we went on the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog and back, along with the purple moose and a monkey dressed as Zorro... and we drank mead, there are advantages to going on holiday with apiarists (honey for breakfast too).

Today we came home via Gelert Ices in Beddgelert and Bodnant Welsh Food Centre, both of which were delicious. I got a serious, serious cuddle from Pesto, the owner of Beddgelert Woodcraft. http://www.beddgelertwoodcraft.com/ Photo of Pesto here, bit blurry though - http://tinyurl.com/otlqmvv He sits on the counter all year round, in his basket, along with warnings, he bites when stressed, but not today, he was all cuddles, wanted picking up and carrying about the shop, purring all the way, beautiful chap, I felt honoured, although I was aware that he was only doing this so I would get hime smelling of him (to annoy Max, of course). Hahaha! Pesto vs Dotty the dog http://tinyurl.com/q5l8arn

The cat sitters were disappointed in my return (they really enjoy their work) and the house has a distinct and distressing eau de chat, scowl. I have washed the throw and the waterproof cover on the sofa bed, emptied the cat litter and the bin, but it, annoyingly, persists. I hope there aren't any unexpected presents anywhere.

Lovely week in good company, I'm happy to have found new people to share my love of the area with.

Photos under the cut.
