Saturday.
Optician- had a £20 voucher so went to Boots Optician. Fabulous, fabulous man, explained everything when I made it clear I was interested. Long story short, my eyes have improved somewhat, my previous optician was a dope, I’m mildly allergic to nickel, I now have two sets of glasses, one for VDU work, one for everything else.

I complained to him that glasses peel, both plastic and metal, he has the same problem, he thinks I have a mild nickel allergy, I pointed out that jewellery doesn’t react that way, he pointed out that I wasn’t wearing the jewellery as long as I wear glasses, good point.

He was very disappointed with my current prescription, too thick, too strong, he explained why I would see better with thinner lenses. My current frames aren’t wide enough (I don’t have a fat face, I have wide cheekbones, he tells me – I love this man).

When it came to choosing new pair, I pointed out that I couldn’t see a thing, so he dragged me back into the consulting room, and in a fit of total genius, put in a pair of disposable contact lenses, so I could see what I was doing. Brilliant idea (he knew I used to wear contacts) and worked like a charm. I resisted purple frames, I fear I am becoming a cliché…

So I have two pairs of titanium frames on order, £247.
£20 voucher, and work will pay for eye test, £20 and give me £75 towards cost so that is £115 off that cost. I am very pleased.

Sunday.
Chinese New Year in Manchester, which was a lot of fun. Went with Eric ‘n Debs WNLJ. We tried to watch the drumming and dragon in Albert Square but it was too crowded, nice to see so many people out on a very cold and occasionally snowy day.

Went to the ever reliable Tampopo for lunch (http://www.tampopo.co.uk/) they hadn’t been told about the New Year celebrations, so were caught a bit flat footed but they are doing a lunch deal so we had two courses for £7, couldn’t do better than that.

We then separated so I could pop into Lush, but they sold out of sale bags on Thursday, so I had to content myself with a small bottle of Tramp. I never manage to get to Lush at the right time.

Met back up in Chinatown, mad busy but all very good natured and fun. Lovely to watch the kids, all smiles, no matter what their ethnicity, all having fun. Stalls selling food and cheap tat. Debs bought a fan and some Japanese style chopsticks (the trip to Tampopo showing up deficiencies in her chopstick handling skills). We all bought moon buns from the bakery and ate them in the street. I chatted with a couple of PC’s, they were enjoying themselves, an easy days work, no hassles, no problems and overtime too! We saw the dragon again, visiting the various shops in Chinatown and gave Buddha a joss stick.

Called in Manchester Art Gallery to see the new Antony Gormley. Very impressive, worked particularly well in the glass space of the stair well.

Would recommend locals visit (would recommend that gallery anyway) and we stopped for a latte before calling it a day.

All in all a good weekend.

We have plenty of snow here. Cheshire, at least Cheshire Plain, doesn’t get much snow so it’s a bit of a novelty, must be about 4-5 inches now and shows no inclination to stop. Had a lovely walk round the grounds at lunchtime, in heavy snow, the country side looks quite delicious and beautiful.
I’ve swapped shift with my co-worker, he lives out at Biddulph, so high up and quite far out. So I’m up at 6am tomorrow. I’m also working out of the Northwich office, rather than our Knutsford place, if it’s really bad I can walk to work, it’s only a mile or so to the Northwich office.
I think I will go home down the A roads, rather than the country lanes tonight.

Re-reading a book and I've just remembered not one but the two major plot points. Drat.

But as a bonus, it does have Death in it.
As in Neil's Death. The book (Icefalcon's Quest, the second, un-necessary but fun, sequel to Barbara Hambly's Darwarth Trilogy) is copyright 1989, Death, the interwebs tells me, also first turned up in 1989 (feels old now, remember first reading both book and Sandman, surely it wasn't 20 years ago?)
Plus the book is dedicated to Neil.

Still enjoying it.
